ABOUT
My Story
Hello, I'm Sweta, the Founder and CEO of Teachndo.
With teary eyes, my journey began with a leap of faith, moving across the country as an immigrant at just 20 years old, following an arranged marriage with someone I barely knew. He was laid off within a couple of months of our marriage, and soon after, we moved from the States to Canada. Despite the uncertainty, lack of networks, and costly degrees, I was determined to build a career and trust people in my new country. This marked the beginning of my resilience.
I worked two survival jobs to save for college tuition, landed an entry-level role in a top bank, and was promoted nine times in 12 years, eventually leading top teams. But then, in a one-minute phone call, I was laid off.
Navigating Corporate Politics & a Layoff
They took my title away, but they could never take my skills and intellect.
Navigating corporate politics has been a pivotal part of my professional journey, especially during my experiences in 2017. That year, I achieved remarkable success, significantly cutting costs and earning recognition from senior leadership. However, my achievements also upset some people in the old group, who didn't like change and were uneasy with my push for accountability and fairness.
In a challenging environment marked by bullying and harassment, I found myself facing opposition from a leadership team that valued loyalty over integrity. Rather than bowing to pressure or conforming to the agenda of the “old boys’ club,” I chose to stand up for what was right, which ultimately made me a target. My boss, aligned with this group, didn’t support my efforts to address unfair treatment.
Amid management changes and restructuring, I was unexpectedly laid off. This experience taught me a valuable lesson: in the corporate world, no one is irreplaceable, and loyalty can often be misconstrued as weakness.
Today, I focus on building a strong personal brand and fostering an environment where transparency, respect, and empowerment thrive. My journey has shaped my commitment to helping others navigate the complexities of corporate culture, ensuring that everyone feels valued and has the opportunity to succeed.
I’m a Two-Time Quitter: We Need to Unlearn Why Winners Don’t Quit
After being laid off, I sold our house and moved with my kids to a new city, only to face poor training and micromanagement in a new role. The toxic environment and inadequate onboarding undermined my confidence, leading to unnecessary surveillance and a Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) despite being new. Understanding that remaining in such a position was harmful, I decided to resign within a year, acknowledging that departing from a toxic work environment can provide significant relief.
Discovering My True Calling
Following my stint in the corporate world, I ventured into the non-profit sector with a focus on recruitment. There, I encountered a significant shortcoming in the quality of employment services. Most roles were temporary survival positions, and the training provided to job seekers fell short. Opting to leave, I chose to pursue consulting, prioritizing quality. This shift highlighted the shortcomings of free employment services: insufficient training, lack of recruitment expertise, and inadequate tools for effective job seeker education, especially for immigrants. Moreover, these services and bridging programs lack customization and thorough vetting, leaving job seekers baffled by career strategy.
Founding Teachndo
Teachndo was born out of a need to address the systemic gaps and hiring biases that often overlook underprivileged immigrants and newcomers. Having seen both sides of the hiring world—from being a candidate to sitting at the decision-making table—I understood the challenges and disparities firsthand. This insight fueled my drive to create a tailored approach that recognizes the unique needs of each individual.
By applying the "one size doesn't fit all" philosophy, I developed strategies that effectively support immigrants in moving from survival jobs to six-figure careers. My work caught the attention of top media outlets, transforming my initial insecurities into a position as a top global career expert featured on national TV and over 100 media platforms. The global impact of Teachndo demonstrates that if I can overcome these challenges, so can other immigrants.
From overcoming the fear of self-doubt in public speaking to achieving over 100 media appearances and awards.
I am honored to share that I have received the Outstanding Career Leader award, the most prestigious accolade from Career Professionals of Canada in 2024, in recognition of my contributions to the field.
